Josh is the son of Craig and Linda Matheson and grandson of Newell and Leah Matheson
Our latest news about our grandson Josh Neilson, son of Linda and
Craig Matheson.
Josh just graduated from Job Corp. He was in the top 10 of his class.
He is now an automoble mechanic. As he was one of the few who
gradnated with top honors in all aspects of automobile mechanics he
was given a medal and a gold cord. (Don't ask me what that is. I
don't know.) Now all he needs is a job!
I am starting this blog in hopes that it will be a fun place,
private from the rest of the world, where we can all keep in touch. Please feel free to post, add pictures,
let us all know how things are going, and if family prayers are needed, then we can all be a part of that.
One rule, if you know someone who wants to join us,
I don't think it will be a problem, they will just need to contact me and I will add them.

News from Leah
Dear Family, here is the latest on our daughter-in-law, Renay. I called yesterday evening (monday) 'and found her in good spirits. However, Russ said that shortly she would begin to feel terrible. She had her shot of the bad chemo earlier. She will have another one in three weeks. Every three weeks she will have one and they really put her down! The chemo that she has every week is bad enough but it doesn't disable her like this one does. Her daughters and her mother are there to take care of her during the worst times. Please keep your prayers going for her!
On a lighter note... our Owen and Evelyn Cottam family reunion will be held on the mountain the saturday of Memorial Day week end. Be sure to put this date on your calendar. Bring your item(s) to raffle off. Remember, for each item you bring you will receive one free ticket. Yes, children can take part too! If there are enough children that bring something we will consider having a raffle just for them. I have not talked too seriously to Chuck to see how he wants to do the "eats" so at this time I do not know what his plans are. As soon as I find out I will let you know. Please plan on attending! We will have another great "What Year Was ...Invented" with another great prize to the one with the most correct answers.

Wyatt Grant J Richens

More Great News from Leah
I got an email from Leah today and this is what she had to say :

Leah's good news
Leah just keeps getting good news from the doctors.
As you might know by now, she broke her arm a few months ago and has been going through quite the ordeal. Surgery and therapy. She just went to her therapist and she no longer has to go back. Yay!!!

The following is an email I received from one of my friends. This was a forward from someone who lives in Japan and just went through the awful earthquakes and tsunamies. If you live in Utah, you must know that it's not if, but when, we will have a big earthquake ourselves. Scary stuff! I need to get more prepared myself and if anyone knows where to find kitchen items (for not too much), like blenders and such that are hand-crank, please let me know. I am also going to be looking for more camping equipment and I will also be in the market soon for a propane room heater. Now that winter is over, hopefully I can find a room heater on clearance. Candles will be on my shopping list and I plan on getting the big pillar type. Also need to be looking for a hand-crank flashlight or two.

base living through the crisis in Japan. Some of these are good
practical reminders for each of our families….
My cousin has some friends in his ward whose daughter/family live on
an military base in Japan. He shared an email with us from the
daughter on her experiences and advise for everyone to be prepared.
Here it is:
The earthquakes (aftershocks) haven't stopped and I spent all night
last night having nightmares about running from collapsing and
buckling buildings. The kids are on edge and tantrums are at an all
time high. They keep busy playing during the day, but when it gets
dark and we have to ration flashlights and candles it gets extra hard
to keep the peace.
A few things I've been wanting to tell people and note for the future:
*Get an old school, corded phone. If the power goes out, your
cordless wont work. We were lucky to have a corded phone upstairs
which helped Doug coordinate with the Branch President to get
accountability of church members. (The phones have worked on-base
off and on, but we were never able to get a call through to the
states.)
*Speaking of accountability, in an emergency, if you're going to leave
your house--leave a note on the door saying where you are going so
when guys from church or work coming looking, they'll know where you
are.
*When the power went out, people off base couldn't get their cars out
of their garage. Turns out there is a special crank to use but most
of our friends didn't have it or know what it was. Luckily Tami had
parked outside and was able to get her kids to our house Friday.
*We've been cooking with our camping equipment. Note to self: Buy
a 20 pack of small propane tanks. We've also used our outdoor BBQ
(in the cold) and I'm wishing I had a spare tank of Propane for that.
(We still don't have power and don't know when it will come back on
On Base. Estimates have said 24 hours (we're way past that) to 1
week, to indefinite.)
*Do you have an extra refill of your prescriptions in your 72 hour
kit? It's terrifying to imagine running out of the things you take
every day. Also, the thought of my kids getting sick and not having
enough Children's Advil and/or Tylenol made me pretty nervous until I
verified we had some of each.
*For ONCE I was glad to be doing Dave Ramsey yesterday when we had
plenty of cash on hand to shop at the commissary. But we also have a
cash and yen emergency fund hidden in the house for back-up which was
very comforting.
*While I'm making notes to myself: Buy a hand crank wheat grinder
and or blender! (We have a freezer full of frozen fruit to make
smoothies but no way to blend anything.)
*Flashlights are a pain. All of our stupid Rayovac
batteries that I had stored for an emergency, LEAKED! So
the flashlights are all slowly dying, being over used by the children,
and being misplaced. The best source of light the last two nights
has been the pillar candles I've had in the cupboard for fancy table
settings. They seem to burn pretty slow and shed a lot of light.
I've gone through 3 and have 1 left. Wish I had a 20 pack of those
in my 72 hour pack. It would be nice not to worry about running out.
Small, light weight, energy efficient lanterns would be nice too.
*Also, my next house will have a wood burning fire place. This all
would have been much easier if we could have been warm.
*Also, I'm buying all my kids a down comforter. We have one on our
bed and we've been fine at night, but the kids need 20 blankets piled
up to stay warm. (Actually, the two big boys each have a two layer
fleece blanket which is pretty warm, but unfortunately, they're not
very big.)
(Poor little Gray had to spend yesterday in his snow suit to stay
warm. The poor little guy must be sensing the stress because he's
been quite out of sorts. He's always shivering (even when bundled)
and very clingy. The kids are all confused and upset but mostly
hanging in there. Like I said, it's been nice to have friends to
keep us company.)
Sorry, I'm rambling on and on but I've had all this stress for the
last two days and my main way to process is by writing my thoughts
down. So I've been going a little nuts feeling so disconnected.
A few more random thoughts:
*The last two days this thought kept running through my head "All are
safely gathered in.". I can't express enough how glad I was/am to
have my family around me. Please say a prayer for our many many
friends with deployed spouses. This is a very stressful time here
and it's really sucky for them to be apart. Also, please pray for
all the Japanese people who are missing or displaced. So sad.
*We were very blessed on base to have running (freezing cold) water.
Off base, sewer lines broke and contaminated the water supply they
weren't even supposed to touch it.
*Today we sang "I Need Thee Every Hour" at church. Has a lot of
meaning right now.
Okay, there are other people who need to use this computer. Everyone
on base is coming off base to try to contact family. -

A Message from Leah
I have been"celebrating" since about seven o'clock Friday morning. I went in for yet another cardioversion to slow my heart rate down and (YIPPEE!) it turns out that I didn't need one. Since a week ago Sunday I have been in rhythm. My cardiologist put me on some new medication awhile back.

So touched
Some of you know that my husband, Matt, and I put on charitable yoga events to benefit Congolese women who are survivors of the most terrible conflict in the world. This past weekend, we had events in Salt Lake City and Logan! These events mean the world to me, and I can't begin to describe how dear this cause is to my heart.
To have the support of loved ones has meant more to me than I can ever say. How thrilled I was to see Sara, Becky, Evie, and Katie at our Salt Lake event! I couldn't stop crying, I was so touched! It was wonderful to see you all again. Thank you so very much for coming!

Leslie Hardy
Leslie Hardy passed away at 10:25 pm on February 13, 2011. Thank you for all your prayers and thoughts. She will be missed dearly as a sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend.
Funeral plans:
Viewing at the Southern Utah Mortuary in Cedar from 5-7 PM on Friday night.
Funeral will be at 11:00 at the 10th Ward LDS Church on about 500 West and 100 East with a viewing before hand starting at 9:30.
Flowers can be ordered to be sent to the mortuary.

Thank you!
A big thank you to Liz for making this blog a little prettier and don't you think it looks great with the picture of my Mom and Dad? They were wonderful parents and prime examples of how we should live our lives. I am so grateful that I was born to them.

Dear family,
I hope you are all well and happy. I haven't had the best of luck going into the first week of the year, but it's starting to turn around. I've been sick, starting with a sore throat, right before Christmas. I was miserable Christmas day. Then, I got a really stuffy nose and a bad cough, combining with a raspy, horrible voice. It's finally feeling better, but just as I thought I was getting rid of it, out pops Pink Eye. Hopefully it clears up quickly.
Anyway, that's enough of my complaining! I moved out of my parent's house about a year ago now, and as much as I love my home and my parents, I was ready. I moved in with a girl, which didn't really work out very well. After 4-5 months, I found a really nice house to move into (their basement). I was pretty much adopted from day one, and I love it. They are so sweet and too good to me.
Anyway, if you'd like to read my blogs, you are all more than welcome to. I blog every so often, so check them out. My photography and writing blogs have not been updated for a while, and probably won't be for some time, but go ahead and check them out anyway!

Fern Cottam Goodwin
Family members. I feel the need to share some news. Many of you may know Fern, others will not. Fern's Dad is Alvin Cottam, Uncle Walter's son. Ok, that's the genealogy.
Fern has a daughter who is going through quite a challenging time with cancer. To family members in the southern part of the state, I would hope that we would support any fundraisers for Jodi March that we are able to. They are family and what we can do to help, along with prayers, would be a wonderful thing.

We have changed the date of the Owen and Evelyn Cottam Reunion from April 1, 2010 to April 2, 2010 to accommodate better those who have to travel. The reunion will be at the Toquerville City park from 12 noon to 4 p.m. Also, we will have a raffle of items donated by those attending. For each item brought there will be one ticket given. We want everyone to be able to leave with at least one item. I also need to know how many children under the age of 11. Thanks for all your help and your support!

I haven't ever done this before, so I hope that I am doing it okay! Just an update on our John. He just had his first transfer (after 7 months in the same place!). He is now in Moe (pronounced Mowee) in Victoria, Australia. He is a district leader. He loves the people there. John told us a few months ago that he was going to have kangaroo tacos. I asked him if that is just what they called them or if they were actually made with kangaroo meat. He said that kangaroo is much cheaper than beef, so yes they are made from kangaroo. Interesting!
